What am I?

Do you think we’re shaped more by our experiences or by who we are?

Within the hush where candlelight grows dim,
A soul leans close to listen to itself;
It weighs the years like dust upon a shelf,
And hears the edge of silence calling him.

What am I, asks the breath between each beat,
A flame, a name, a shadow passing through?
The stars above remain both old and new,
While memory keeps time beneath my feet.

It wonders if the dark is only rest,
Or doorways set within the mind’s own night;
If longing is a wound or hidden light,
And whether truth is found in each unrest.

So still it stands, half-broken, half made whole,
A question shaped and shining: this is soul.
