Mizmaze

A mizmaze is a type of turf maze or labyrinth that has a single path with no junctions or crossings. The word mizmaze is a reduplication and alteration of the word maze. Mizmazes are different from conventional mazes because they are not meant to confuse or challenge the walker, but rather to provide a meditative or ritualistic experience.

There are only two surviving historic turf mazes in England that are called mizmazes: one on St Catherine’s Hill near Winchester, and one near Breamore House in Hampshire. Both of them have unique designs and histories that are not fully understood.

    • Thank you! It’s a fascinating thing, I’m glad it sparked your interest! I didnt make a connection to Pi Day today either until I saw Bing used a similar maze on its homepage, one of those serendipitous synchronicities 😊
