DIY Epic

What’s the longest book you’ve ever read?

“Before the projects, there was the manual—grey, handy, and somehow longer than the whole DIY boom.”

“Ode to the Readers Digest DIY Manual”

Plastic-clad, handle-gripped,
a brick in a briefcase,
the longest book I’ve ever read—
its pages, yellowed like a sunburnt warning.

I flipped, I sketched, I taped,
a handywoman in training,
while the 70s DIY boom
roared like a lawnmower with a loose blade.

It taught me to hang a shelf
(or at least pretend I could),
to caulk a window with the grace
of a sleep-deprived surgeon.

Now it sits on my shelf,
a monument to overconfidence,
its spine cracked like my dreams
after Project #47 failed.

But oh, how it tried.
*How it *wanted* me to succeed.*
How it whispered,
*”You *can* fix that leak…*
…probably.”

“Feet up, manual on the table—handywoman retired, but the DIY book still has a handle on her.”
