A pastoral poem is a genre or mode of poetry that refers to works that idealize country life and the landscape they take place in. Pastoral poems usually make use of an idyllic setting, one that is completely, or almost entirely, removed from society.
In the lush and wild watermeadow
Where the grasses sway and bend
There is a hidden world of wonder
That only few can comprehend
There among the flowers and rushes
Fluttering with grace and ease
There are countless bright-winged creatures
Dancing with the sun and breeze
They are the butterflies of beauty
Painting the meadow with their hues
They are the emblems of freedom
Chasing every dream they choose
Some are yellow like the daffodils
Some are blue like the summer sky
Some are red like the poppies
Some are white like clouds on high
They sip the nectar from the blossoms
They rest upon the leaves and stems
They mingle with their fellow flyers
They greet each other as old friends
They do not care for human troubles
They do not heed our toils and strife
They only live for simple pleasures
They only savor every life
In the lush and wild watermeadow
Where the grasses sway and bend
There is a hidden world of wonder
That only few can comprehend.
In the unkempt watermeadow
Where the grass grows wild and free
There's a hidden world of wonder
That only few can see
There, among the reeds and rushes
Fluttering with grace and ease
Dwell the lovely winged creatures
That we call the butterflies
They dance upon the flowers
That bloom in every hue
They sip the sweetest nectar
That sparkles with the dew
They chase each other playfully
Across the open sky
They rest upon the branches
When they grow weary by and by
They do not care for troubles
That plague the human race
They live in simple harmony
With nature's gentle pace
They are the joy of summer
The beauty of the spring
They are the pastoral poem
That makes my heart sing.
