Rain

Setting out for evening walk,
dusk came early.
Think it’s going to rain.

“Nah, it’s only spitting.
It’ll be ok.
We’ll go anyway.”

Wind gusts tear through the oaks.
Fretting, churning, breaking
like great beach waves.

“Ohwell,
it’s not too bad,
Hope it doesn’t get worse.”

Cold streaking drops increase.
Dense grey haze of wet air,
between dark twisting trees.

“This is bad,
It’s too windy!
Hood won’t stay up.”

Rivulets pattern dark tarmac
with shifting ripples.
Raindrop rings merge in puddles.

“This is bad
Getting wet.
Look! Wet through!”

Wet mist blankets the landscape.
Horizon concealed.
Teeming with wind-driven droplets.

“Dont like this.
Terrible.
Water in wellies.”

Clouds heaving and surging above
sunken lane.
Heavy drops make great bubbles.

“Dreadful.
Feels bad,
Everything wet!”

Torchlight by the galvanised kiss gate.
Wet field squelches,
liquified mud rises between grass tufts.

“Horrible!
This downpour.
Know what I mean?”

Deep pools on the briar path,
milky with clay.
Yeah, totally soaked.

“Awful,
Drenched and soggy,
not good.”

A deer barks from somewhere.
Wind lashing.
Relentless sheets driving over oat crop.

“So wet!
Glad to be back,
soon!”

Woodpidgeon claps, flutters hurriedly
from a dripping holly.
Some shelter in the sodden coppice.

“Back!
Must change.
Get dry.”

High wind blows cold, clouds thin bright.
Wolf moon.
Shining light breaks through.
