On writing

Why do you write?

I write because I read,
and follow the ways.
A script conveys
so much over time and space.

Mostly I take notes
to help me remember
things I’m learning,
and lists to forget.

(Stuff to do and get
when consigned to a list
clears thoughts stuck
in recurring loops.)

Recipes to follow
when I cook new foods
and keep in a collection.
if they turn out good.

Writing feels pretty fine
excercise for the mind,
connecting of dots,
to make sense of things.

It takes time and practice,
to appreciate challenges
as a route to improvement
is like keeping fit.

There’s adventure and discovery
of stories and new worlds
previously unknown things
emerge through these marks,

and known things
overlooked, re-presented,
freshly considered
can astonish and intrigue.

Distilling and summarising
with a poetic aesthetic
with beauty and elegance…
and relevance.

As expression of grief
and sadness,
a conduit for private pain
or public confession.

Or fun,
playful and lyrical,
to be spoken
or sung.
