Rainbows

In this dark world and wide, my light is spent
Before I reach the middle of my days,
And that one gift which I should not dispraise
Lies hidden in me, though I am content
To use it for my Maker, and repent
My faults before he comes and judges me.
"God does not ask for man's work or his fee:
His servants best obey his mild command.
He is a king. His messengers are grand
And fly across the earth and sea with haste;
They also serve who only stand and wait."
But sometimes in my sleep I have a taste
Of joy that breaks through gloom and dull dismay,
A rainbow bright that signals a new day
And fills my soul with wonder and with praise.
Unseen rainbow
