Dawn

Mending the nets

They rise before the dawn each day
To mend the nets and pack the bait
They watch their husbands sail away
And pray they won't be home too late

They know the dangers of the sea
The storms, the rocks, the hungry gulls
They know how hard their lives can be
But they don't complain, they don't bawl

They work as hard as any man
They trade and process all the fish
They feed their families as they can
They do their duties as they wish

They also have a voice and say
In how their fisheries are run
They fight for rights and fairer pay
They stand together as one

They are the backbone of their towns
The unsung heroes of the coast
They wear no jewels, they wear no crowns
But they deserve our praise and toast

Mending the nets
