Cuckoo

A sonnet for Joe

I heard your voice among the rowan trees
That bloomed with fragrant clusters in the spring
You sang to me a song of love and peace
And made my lonely heart rejoice and sing

You were the cuckoo that I longed to see
The one who brought me hope and joy and light
You were the mate that I had wished to be
The one who filled my days and dreams and nights

But then you flew away and left me here
Alone among the fading rowan flowers
You did not say goodbye or shed a tear
You did not care for me or for our hours

And now I wait and listen for your call
But all I hear is silence in the fall

Cuckoo Joe

The BTO’s cuckoo tracking project is a ground-breaking research initiative that aims to reveal the secrets of cuckoo migration and the reasons for their population decline in the UK. Since 2011, the project has fitted satellite tags to almost 100 cuckoos from different regions of Britain and followed their journeys to and from Africa. The project has discovered new information about the routes, stopovers, wintering areas and survival rates of cuckoos, as well as how they are affected by environmental factors such as drought and climate change. The project has also engaged the public and raised awareness about cuckoo conservation through its interactive website, where people can follow the live movements of the tagged cuckoos on a map. The project has also collaborated with other international studies, such as the Beijing Cuckoo Project, to share expertise and data on cuckoo tracking.
