Land

Beachy Head

Upon the cliffs of Beachy Head I stand,
And gaze upon the vast and endless sea,
Where waves crash against the rocky land,
And seabirds soar in graceful harmony.

The wind it whispers secrets in my ear,
Of ancient tales and long forgotten lore,
Of battles fought and victories held dear,
And love that blooms forevermore.

The beauty of this place does overwhelm,
As nature’s wonders all around me shine,
A peaceful calm within me does take helm,
As I am lost in thoughts divine.

Oh Beachy Head your majesty astounds,
A place where peace and solace can be found.

A poem and images inspired by Charlotte Turner Smith’s, Beachy Head.

Charlotte Turner Smith was an English Romantic poet and novelist. She was the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic. The first edition of her Elegiac Sonnets, written in 1783 while she was in debtor’s prison with her husband and children, brought her sudden fame. Some of her other well-known poems include “Sonnet LXX: On Being Cautioned Against Walking on an Headland Overlooking the Sea” and “Sonnet II Written at the close of Spring
