Revelry.
The mystery of Jack-in-the-green
Long ago, in a small village nestled at the foot of the Fire Hills, the people celebrated the coming of spring with a festival on May Day. The festivities were led by a mysterious figure known as Jack-in-the-green, who was said to embody the spirit of the new season.
Jack-in-the-green was a figure shrouded in mystery. No one knew where he came from or why he chose to reveal himself on May Day. Some said he was a pagan god of the forests, while others believed he was a manifestation of the Green Man, a symbol of rebirth and renewal.
Regardless of his origins, the people of the village eagerly awaited his arrival each year. On the morning of May Day, they gathered at the foot of the Fire Hills to watch as Jack-in-the-green emerged from the woods, surrounded by a group of revelers dressed in green.
With a flourish, Jack-in-the-green led the procession up the hills, dancing and singing as they went. The people followed, laughing and clapping their hands in time to the music.
As they reached the top of the hills, they were greeted by a breathtaking sight. Spread out before them was the entire two mile seafront promenade, lined with hundreds of motorbikes, their engines revving in anticipation.
The festival of motorbikes had coincidentally chosen the same day and location to gather, but Jack-in-the-green and his revelers were not deterred. They joined in the celebrations, dancing and singing alongside the bikers.
As the day wore on, the festivities grew more and more wild. Jack-in-the-green led the revelers in a dance around a giant bonfire, while the motorbikes roared up and down the promenade, performing stunts and showing off their skills.
As the sun began to set, Jack-in-the-green disappeared back into the woods, leaving the villagers and the bikers with a sense of wonder and magic that would stay with them for years to come.
And though no one could say for certain who or what Jack-in-the-green truly was, they knew that he embodied the spirit of the season, and that his revels on May Day were a time of joy and celebration, marking the beginning of a new cycle of life and growth.

May day morn
Amidst the Fire Hills on May Day morn,
Emerging from the woods in garb of green,
A figure hailed with revelry and horn,
With merry songs and dances to be seen.
Jack-in-the-green, a mystery unknown,
The Green Man’s spirit some would claim he bore,
His presence in the village widely shown,
The people welcomed him with open door.
And lo! A festival of motorbikes, Gathered on the promenade’s long stretch,
A sight that drew the curious and the likes,
With engines roaring loud, a joyous fetch.
Thus, revelry and wonder filled the air,
A time of celebration, beyond compare.

Green figure in woods,
May Day revels 'neath Fire Hills, Spring's joy fills the air.
