Bertie the bank vole, Wilma the woodmouse and Sammy the shrew were best friends who lived in the same forest. They loved to explore new places and have fun together. One day, they decided to go on an adventure to the other side of the forest, where they had never been before.
They packed some snacks and set off early in the morning. They crossed a stream, climbed a hill and walked through a meadow. They saw many beautiful flowers, birds and insects along the way. They also met some friendly animals who told them stories and gave them directions.
They were having a great time until they reached a patch of brambles. They tried to go around it, but it was too big. They tried to go under it, but it was too prickly. They tried to go over it, but it was too high. They were stuck.
They looked for a way out, but they couldn't find any. They started to feel scared and hungry. They wished they had never left their home.
Suddenly, they heard a rustling noise behind them. They turned around and saw a big hedgehog coming out of the brambles. He had sharp spines all over his body and a long snout. He looked fierce and angry.
The three friends were terrified. They thought he was going to eat them or hurt them. They huddled together and hoped he would go away.
But he didn't. He came closer and closer until he was right in front of them. He looked at them with his small black eyes and said:
"Hello there, little ones. What are you doing here?"
The three friends were speechless. They didn't know what to say.
The hedgehog smiled and said:
"Don't be afraid. I'm not going to harm you. I'm Harry the hedgehog, and I live in this patch of brambles. It's my home and my protection from predators. But I'm also very lonely here. I don't have any friends or visitors."
He sighed and said:
"I saw you trying to get through the brambles, but you couldn't. I felt sorry for you, so I came to help you. I know a secret passage that leads to the other side of the forest. If you want, I can show you the way."
The three friends couldn't believe their ears. They looked at each other and nodded.
They said:
"Thank you, Harry. That's very kind of you. We would love to see the other side of the forest."
Harry smiled again and said:
"Great! Follow me then."
He led them through a hidden tunnel under the brambles that only he knew about. It was dark and narrow, but safe and cozy.
They emerged on the other side of the forest, where they saw a lake, a waterfall and a cave.
They gasped in awe and said:
"Wow! This is amazing!"
Harry said:
"I'm glad you like it. This is my favorite place in the whole forest. You can stay here as long as you want."
The three friends thanked him again and hugged him.
They said:
"Harry, you're not lonely anymore. You're our friend now."
Harry felt happy and warm.
He said:
"Thank you, friends. You're very welcome here."
They spent the rest of the day playing, swimming and exploring together.
