Okay, I will try to write a villanelle poem about the Long Man of Wilmington chalk figure walking away. Here is what I came up with:
He stands on Windover Hill so tall
A giant carved from ancient chalk
But what if he decides to walk?
He holds two staves, a mystery all
Some say he's old, some say he's mock
He stands on Windover Hill so tall
He sees the seasons change and fall
The sun and moon and stars his clock
But what if he decides to walk?
He hears the birds and beasts that call
The wind and rain and thunder shock
He stands on Windover Hill so tall
He feels the urge to roam and sprawl
To leave behind his lonely rock
But what if he decides to walk?
He takes a step and breaks his thrall
He shakes the earth with every knock
He leaves behind Windover Hill so small
He is the Long Man who can walk.

Bravo! The villanelle is a tough form and I enjoyed this.

I like the repetitions. It’s one of those forms that has to be done well or it falls completely flat, like when the rhymes…don’t.
