Love

How do you show your love?

“Some love too little, some too long,
  Some sell, and others buy;”

Oscar Wilde, The Ballad of Reading Gaol

I love cats and I show them by noticing how they feel and understanding what they need.

A stray arrived one day and was hungrily eating crumbs of bread I put out for birds. I gave him some cat biscuits and for several months he would make himself visible to let me know he was hungry. If I went too close he would hiss and growl. He has dry places to sleep and decking to sun himself, sometimes I catch glimpses of him but he’s elusive, it would be nice to gain his trust but he is so very timid.

By contrast my two indoor cats are warmly friendly. They are sisters, and the first cats I’ve kept inside. They always greet me when I come in so I give them each some attention when I talk and play with them. I always make sure they have good food and fresh water, a clean litter tray and somewhere warm to sleep.

There are shelves along the widowsills to sit on to watch the world outside. They like cardboard boxes to hide in and the corrugated kind for sharpening their claws. Some patience is required with the shreddings they create and the hair they shed. However the love is unconditional but feels reciprocated when they’re curled up on my lap and softly purring.

I love you – like a storm-burst
overhead – I must confess it;”
